walleyewacker
It was an incredible hunt in gregory county SD, right off the Ft. Randall dam in the river hills. It was obviously real early in the season and the toms were not cooperating at all. I did call in four jakes right away in the morning that I let go but any bird of any size that I could see would not gobble even when called at. This meant we had to spot and stalk all weekend and we found a flock of about a half dozen with a jake and this bird from a hilltop. With calling being pointless, all we could do was try to get in front of them. With a ton of miles and some belly crawlin I got in position to let this one get 20-25yds for a shot. 9.25in beard and 1.25in spurs. Like I had mentioned before, the scenery was incredible and probably the most enjoyable aspect of the hunt, it was worth every step through some of the steepest country I have hunted in. I had a bow tag to fill after this one as well. Spot and stalk is even tougher with a bow but I did get a 50yd opprotunity at a nice bird that I never took because it was windy and I didnt feel confident in a clean kill. Every time I thought I was infront of this bird he kept veering off. Once again no gobbling even after a little calling at that distance. One thing that did help was that the hens were very vocal. I honestly had to stop and listen for the hens so I could keep track of their position as I was working around them.\
