River Muskies...

Recommended Posts

Know the area or landing that your attempting to fish. Most rivers that hold muskies have specific stretches (maybe 4-8 miles of water long) that typically do better than other stretches of water. Most rivers stay fairly turbid and remain "high" until mid July, almost always stabilizing in August. River fish will tend to be more aggressive.....more apt to react to your lure than their lake relatives. Also know what class fish it is your after: many rivers will grow cookie cutters 28-40 inches, with a handful of muskies up to 47 inches, maybe a 48 but rarely a 50 incher. Trying to glean any information from a river-rat about specific landings or stretches is almost impossible. You'll have dig for your own treasures.....no maps, no mouthpiece's, few resorts, and no jetskies/water skiers---all good things.

I haven't got it figured out yet, but I do think they are very much different from the lake variety skies. From getting pretty much skunked last year on a river on spots which I know hold muskies, I'm gonna try mid mornings more and evenings less this year. Overall I'm gonna focus on midday when the sun is up and/or after dark. I'm still experimenting so let me know if you crack the code - I don't think its lure selection but figuring out the prime feeding periods. Just my .002 worth crazy.gif
