Bowfishing for Cats?

I am making this post to make sure you are aware of a proposal to bowfish for catfish in Texas. This proposal will be discussed April 6 at a TWPD meeting.

First of all you will ask me why a non Texican would care if they run arrows through catfish in Texas. Well lets just say if you had an opportunity to fish in Texas some day you would want big catfish available.

Another reason would be that politicians are not very imaginative and often copy legislation they see in other states.

Also being logical you might think that catch and release of mature catfish is not an option for catfish that have been pierced with arrows. It would stand to reason that those cats would also be unable to spawn and contribute to future catfish populations.

I have decided to assist catfishermen anywhere when I can. We recently had issues with Tennessee when they proposed repeal of their limit on trophy catfish. We at least temporarily stopped them from enacting legislation that would again allow commercial fishermen from harvesting unlimited amounts of catfish over 34 inches.

If you have an opinion on this issue I urge you to contact TWPD and let them know. I have contacted people who have attended these meetings and was told they listen to comments and take tape recordings and notes of what is discussed. Your input is just as important as Texans because tourist money affects economics also.

I can see using a bow on carp (we should be able to use firearms) grin.gif I think it would be tough to get any catfish though.

We here are pretty quick to complain about our laws but I think for the most part, we got it pretty good when you think about conservation. I still would like to see tighter limits on Minnesota River Mudeyes but at least people aren't using the "good ol boy" techniques to put um on the table.
