Building a sleeper fish house

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of possibly building a sleeper fish house this summer. I would like something in the range of a 10x20. My question is do people usually build these size of houses at the resort at which they are stored, or if you do build them at you own place, how do you get them to the resort with being as wide as it is. I don't of too many trailers that can handle something that wide.

I was thinking it would be nice if there was a site dedicated to a fish house gallery. It would be beneficial to people who are planning to build fish houses as far as ideas go.

I considered the same thing. I wanted to build a 10 x 20 as well. I think they bring them on the ice in two pieces. You don't have to build them at the resort. There is someone you can hire to move it for you even though it is larger than the legal size. I think it is a special permit but I don't know for sure. All I can say is spend a lot of time planning and don't build it all at once. I noticed when I built mine I have a lot of time to think while waiting for them to bite. It is amazing what you can come up with when you have a little time on your hands.

Good Luck!!!

Knew a guy in Brainerd area that pre-fabed the walls, floor/runners, and roof.

He had a tandem axle 6 or eight place snowmobile trailer

he laid/strapped the partitions on and got the permit & flags needed to transport it.

Assembled it at the resort in less then a day and trimmed it out. Insulated/wired it another day and measured for pre cut paneling he brought and tact on quick next trip.

was a 10 X 22 I belive in size or close. Had two planks with boat rollers he'd use to winch it up the trailer, and off at access

In the summer he'd leave it stored on the trailer blocked & removed the tires !!

Planning, time & $$$$ smile.gif

I built myself a 10x22 a few yrs ago and the owners of the logde that I stoed it at on mil lacs had a flat bed that was used for cars. He loaded it up and I finished the inside of the house at the lake. It was alot of work but worth it. Sold it now I have one on wheels and man is that nice!!

If the resort or whatever will let you build onsite I would suggest doing it there and hauling the preassembled walls etc. in several trips even though the total expense increases a little. The potential stress of hauling it may not be good for it if you have a long haul.it probably will get hauled on a flatbed designed for a heavy payload but my experience with a relatively light load on a rig designed to haul serious weight on our less than smooth roads could rattle and shake the daylights out of all your hard work.also finding a trucker who can work a schedule around mother nature and her cross winds etc.could be tougher yet.I built a 10' x 24' deck two years ago for my camper sitting 75 miles away and went through the same kind of decision making process in a way.Inevitably I built the framework in panels and it all fit on a car trailer for a smooth ride and made it a lot easier project overall.I even got to fish both mornings before working on the assembly portion of the job while I was there.kind of like a mini vacation and in your case any add on ideas you would think of while possibly spending a couple weekends assembling it could be very worthwhile.Good luck!
