Marcum Transducer Question

This is really going to make me sound stupid, but since this is the first flasher I've ever owned and fished with, I need to ask....

The unit I got is the Cabela's Marcum VXR. The transducer comes with a circular float that attaches to the transducer cord. When I put the float on the cord, the float can slide up and down the cord. The float came with two plastic tightening straps. So, my question is....am I suppose to put the straps around the float and pull them tight enough so that the float is snug around the transducer cord such that I can slide the float up and down the cord with some resistance? If so, would I really need to pull the straps tight? It appears that there would be excess strap if they are pulled around the float...do you cut off the excess?

A little help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you have it under controol.. Yep, put those straps on tight but you still want to be able to move the float when ice conditions get deeper. Then yes cut the extra strap so that your line doesnt get caught in it!
