Christmas Tree Structure On a String?

I was thinking about building my own SOS (Structure On a String), and remembered I have an old, really skinny (12" max) Christmas tree in the basement. I think I'm going to try tyingsome string to it, and pushing it down the hole, and putting some weights on the end to keep her down. I don't THINK there is a law against this, or a reason I shouldn't, and I think it'd be great for a sleeper ice house, since you'd have 12-24 hours to let the fish congregate. The only problem I can see is having a fish tie you up in one, but then you could just bring the tree up.

Anyways, all this IS speculation, and I'm asking you guys for any reasons this would be a bad idea. I would of course wash the tree before putting it in the lake.
