The past years the spot we are at we would either hear or see geese from 9 till noon. this year we see only five to six flocks a day of about 15-20, but I have thursdays off from my classes so I'm gonna try and surprise them on the first day. I'll also be out there this weekend! grin.gif can't wait to use my new M2

I checked the DNR report for Lac Qui Parle because we have a group heading out there next week. Numbers were down but the Canadian people said the food is almost gone in the holding area and the geese were waiting for the right wind to migrate. Last night, when the wind switched to the northwest, it might have been the one. We'll know in a day or so. I have my hopes up.

Fish Off, Nope, the wind died so the geese won't get there until after you leave, whenever that is. By my new calculations, the main flight will arrive the day I get there. grin.gifgrin.gif

Give us a report when you get back and I'll do the same.

Hey Fish Off, I just read today's DNR migration report for Lac Qui Parle and the cold front and wind brought about 19,000 geese to the refuge. You'll have a shot at a bunch of new geese who don't know where the blinds are and aren't used to decoys and calls. Good luck and keep us posted.

We hunted Fri-Sun and Sat was good while the other days were poor. Sat. was fun as the birds decoyed and came to the calls. One guy couldn't hit the birds so it prolonged the hunt and allowed more practice and fun watching !

I think alot of new birds came in each day as there were alot of huge flocks very high that came into the refuge throughtout the day. Hunting pressure was pretty low and the DNR had a count of 24,500 on Sat.afternoon.

thats funny i hunted sat + sun and I thought Sun was the better day. sat we saw flocks but they were all high. sun day we had birds right on the deck all morning to bad we were off by about 1/4 of a mile. all the birds swung left and landed in the field next ta us.

We had the "field next door" problem also, It makes things difficult when they all start following each other to the other birds on the ground. We thought up a few ideas to chase them out but didn't have a bazooka with !

I'm looking forward to the later season and lotsa birds around. We mainly hunt south and NW of the lake.

Just got back from three days at the refuge. Day one, we got a water blind and just after sunrise, bunches of geese came over, returning to the refuge, including an extremely stupid one that landed in the decoys and swam around them trying to get them to play with her. She was too stupid to live. Day two, ground blinds and no shooting. Day three, water blind again and no birds within two hundred yards of us. There were some Walleyes caught below the dam, one this morning weighed 10lb. 11 oz. but not caught by me.

The goose count as of Monday was 28,000 birds. Not many hunters were using the refuge blinds. The refuge employees said that close to a hundred thousand geese have left Manitoba but have not arrived at the refuge and no one seems to know where they are at the moment. A day or two of north wind should bring some great hunting.
