Diamond lake in Dayton

Has anyone hunted ducks on this lake? It looks to be an ok spot and I was thinking of trying it sometime this week.

Haven't hunted it in years but remember that it used to get pounded pretty hard..not sure nowadays though.

Thanks for the reply. I've driven by the landing a few times and didn't see many vehichles. Could you recomend any spots on the lake? Did you have any success there?

I haven't hunted it, but have driven by a few times. Last Saturday a.m. there were two trucks with trailers at the landing, I didn't have time to glass the lake, but I didn't see them fishing so I assumed they were hunting. There looks to be really only one good spot on the lake, that's the cattail island towards the NW corner of the lake. I've seen hunters set up there. On the West end there are more cattails and smaller bays that you could probably hunt, but the big water would probably get the most looks from passing flocks. That's how I see the lake, hope it helps.

I was even thinking of the same side of the lake as the landing, to the right or north seems to be some reeds. I'd have the sun at my back too. I might try i this week if I get some time.

i was one of those trucks there saturday morning. saw tons of ducks and a ton geese. only ended up with two. a drake woodie and a hen mallard. saw lots of birds but couldnt get any to come into the docoys. would love to try the lake again this week but not worth it to paddle my self across there lake where we were set up. good luck to anyone who goes out.

What day were you thinking about hunting it? I live in Maple Grove and might be able to get off one morning. I have a 14 foot camo boat with an 8 hp motor. Also dog, dekes, etc. I was also thinking about trying French Lake sometime during the week. Ever hunt there? I know it gets a lot of pressure on weekends, but it's a little more "ducky", surrounded by cattails. Let me know if you're interested in having a hunting partner one a.m.

I haven't hunted French before, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to go in the morning this week. It will be kind of hit or miss with my schedule, but thank you for the offer. I'm probably going to pheasant hunt this weekend, but I might take you up on duck hunting sometime next week.

well a buddy of mine hunted there opener and said he was done by 9:30 with a limit and told us where he had hunted so we went there and it was across the lake. i think the other guy that was hunting there saturday morning was alot closer to the landing. i want to try hunting the evening this week but it lookin like rain guess i will have to watch the weather.

Stayman, i was told there was big bolders around the access of french so that u couldnt get a boat in there is that true?

That is false. As high as the water is you can back a boat in. You will need to push it off the trailer since it doesn't drop off much, but no sign of boulders when I stopped by there. 2 years ago there was also a sign that said you could only have motors under 5 h.p., but that's been gone since last year. I have not been on the lake since then to know how deep it is. 2 years ago it was way down and you would have needed a mudmotor to boat near shore. I assume it should be fine now. That's what I know!

anyone goin to be hunting this lake this week evening or mornings? would love to get out this week if i can find some time. got to fix the blind on my boat. buddy pulling my boat did a U turn and flipped a decoy bag off my boat and the blind flew off and broke.

last night a buddy called as i was leaving for work and asked if i wanted to go to french lake. got home from work at 4 and left. it was a cool morning around 33. maybe saw 20 ducks and geese. thinking if i dont go to the cabin tomorrow night goin to try it at night time.

Sorry I didn't get back to you, I didn't hop on the internet soon enough. I did get out last Thusday am, saw a few birds, missed a nice canvasback and got one drake ringneck. This week I'm up north starting Wed. Don't know when I'll get out to French Lake again. Hope you get out soon!
