24 volt trolling motor question

andy j

Question

I was thinking of getting one of those trojon deepcycle trolling/starter batteries. I would use a battery for 12 volt trolling and use the new trojon for 24 volt and starting, so I would not have to have 3 batteries. My dad has done this before and seemed to work for him, but wondering if anyone else does it this way. What do you think? thanks AJ

Jim,
how are ya, I will use 2 batteries but the one battery used for 24 volt would also be used for the starting battery, maybe I am doing a bad job of discribing it. I will email you the phone # for the league, you will enjoy it. Later AJ

Andy,

Sure... you can do it.. would I recommend it? Probably not... one big reason is that if you were to run the trolling motor long enough to pull the batteries down too far, you won't be able to start your outboard... which, depending on the size is probably a bear to pull start.

The other reason I wouldn't do it is that you will get interference on your locator (presuming you have one)from the trolling motor...

so no... I wouldn't recommend it, but it will work.
