Balsam Lake Report, 10/1: If You Like Pike......

Recommended Posts

....you gotta go here!

For those of you who DON'T know, Balsam Lake is a rather large lake with a very fertile fishery just north of Rt 8 on Rt 46, a few miles east and north of St. Croix Falls, WI. Been fishing BL regularly for about 10 years now and it has rarely let me down, including this past Saturday.

Balsam Lake Map

Put in at the launch on the far west side of the lake where Rt 46 crosses it right next to Ward's Resort. Had to get my boat in order, so I motored out to the middle of that west bay in about 28 ft of water, marking hundreds of fish. Absentmindedly threw a crawler on a harness, dropped it to about 20 feet and drifted northward toward the shore. While up in the front of the boat arranging all my dump, I heard a banging the back of the boat - it was my rod ready to get pulled in! I jumped to the back, grabbed it and pulled in a beautiful dark green northern pike going about 3.5 lbs. I abandoned my front-of-the-boat housekeeping and started to pay attention to fishing. I had drifted into about 14 feet of water and threw out another crawler harness and took another nice pike! Drifted back over the same spot two more times and caught one more - all in about 30 minutes.

Wanted to work the docks for bass, as my brother and I have had great success in the past landing scrappy fat bucketmouths all along that north shore, so I drifted into 6-7 feet of water. Put on a smaller Mepps Musky Killer and took two more nice pike in about 6 casts.

It slowed a little, so I put on a big bass spinner and caught a nice largie in some weeded flats just east of the docks where the shoreline takes a northerly jag.

What was remarkable was how pretty the pike were - very dark green with bright white markings. Very agressive, too. Fished the docks a little more and took two more smaller hammer handles.

Left that pike area to do a little exploring, including an area on the north side of the lake filled with stumps. Got skunked there. Worked the islands with a crawler harness while casting my Musky Killer and took two big rock bass on the worms.

Too much fishing excitement for me so I did lunch and Leinenkugel's at the Fox Den Resort and packed her in.

This lake is very highly recommended and it seems like the pike are on the autumn bite!

Hope to see you out there!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
