cubbies11
A bunch of questions about Carlos Avery WMA. Just wondering how many people I can expect to see hunting this area? Is it going to be people on top of people opening day or is everyone spaced out pretty well? What about the rest of the season? Any other info about the area would be appreciated. A buddy and I are going to scout sunday morning. Cubbies
superfish2
opening day will be a zoo. I'm not all that familair with carlos but I know one part is known as the firing line on opening day, but I've also heard if you look around and put in some work you can find a spot to yourself. I think you just need to be carefull of what is refuge and what isn't. There are other places up that way too. lamprey pass and some other lakes and wmas, where if you have a boat or canoe you can find a spot.
Powerstroke
I highly doubt you will find a place to yourself here. I hunted duck opener hear prolly for 3 yrs and every year was worse than the one before. Wear safety glasses and don't smile cause you will get hit with shot and you don't want to lose and eye or a tooth. The firing line is the group of guys who line up on the road seperating the "refuge" portion closed to hunting and the rest of the open WMA. They fire at the birds coming and going from the refuge. I've seen people skybust on geese over 100 yds up. Do not go here if you're trying to get farther than 50 yrds from another person.
cubbies11
Powerstroke, do you hunt Pool #3? If so how many people do you think estimate will be out there? Sounds like that where we will be headed.Cubbies

I used to hunt up that way years ago and it SUCKED. From what I have heard it has not changed either.Good luck to you.
fishhard
I live a few miles away and look at the pools for ducks and geese on a regular basis. There are a few geese but nothing for ducks in the area at all. There will be alot of hunters trying to kill a small amount of ducks. I would not hunt here if it was my last option.Sorry
metrojoe
They don't call it Carload Avery for nuthin'. I never duck hunted there but Powerstroke is right on. The ditch along the road is elbow to elbow hunters. You may be able to find a spot away from everybody but you'll need a small jon or canoe. Stenzel
Good luck hunting that area. I've hunted it for the last six years but never on opener. Weekends - foget it. During the week is the best time to go but the ususal guys still line up on the road. This year might be a little different. It seemed like everyone has/had the spinning winged decoys but with them banned in WMA it might help some. It's hard to compete when guys set up 6 to 10 of them in one spot. Be ready to be frustrated and p*ssed off beyond belief. My favorite are the guys that hunt in tennis shoes and don't even bother looking for ducks. It doesn't pay to call TIPS either cause they never show up and when they do NOBODY speaks english. Also, EVERYTHING is fair game. I've seen bluejays, swans, starlings, marsh hawks, crows... all get shot out there. Also don't be surprise to hear people shooting rifles. I think a few found out that you can't hit ducks at 150 yrs but you can with a high power rifle. Bottom line is the place is a joke, the DNR knows about it but refuses to do anything. I could go on but I'm getting more red just thinking about it.
cubbies11
Where is this road that you guys are talking about? We have a canoe and are planning on paddling as far as possible to get away from people. How do we know what is refuge and what isn't? Is Pool #3 ok to hunt and how many people are out there? We are trying to decide if we should find some place else or give it a shot out there.Cubbies
