bmc
I've fished the St. Louis River twice this month with minimal results. The first night a buddy and I fished by the bridge on US Hwy 2. We fished from about 7 to 9:30pm and caught 6 channels, but they were all little ones we threw back. We caught them on crawlers and cut sucker minnows. Where we were at it seemed to be pretty shallow, it looks deeper by the bridge, maybe that would've been a better spot? I tried last night in Floodwood and had one good one on, but it got off. I was using a whole light northern sized sucker minnow with the belly cut open. The cat must've grabbed him right behind the head as the skin was pulled down towards the tail, but I had him on long enough to know he felt pretty good. Anyone have any suggestions for a shorebound angler on the St. Louis? What about bait? I've been thinking of trying some of the Berkley Power Bait. I use a #1 or #2 Gammy circle hook and a slip sinker about a foot up the line.Brian
Mr Special
I would upsize your hooks. I use 2/0-6/0 but have done the best with 4/0. I would also cut bait instead of whole sucker. Good luck
big musk411
I fished that area acouple of weeks ago and did real well. I was my first catfishing expidition. here is what we did. We started out fishing with crawlers and caught some redhorse[suckers] during the afternoon. then we cut up the redhorse into about 1.5 inch chunks and fished with that on the bottom with a weight about 18 inches in front of it. The first catfish hit around 8:30 and the bite continued untill about 2:00 am when we went to sleep. We caught about 40 between 3 guys averaging 3-5 lbs. the biggest one was probably 7-8 . We were fishing swift current in about 1-3 fow. I would reccomend finding a camping spot and hitting the night bite. I have tried fishing the under bridge there, its about 22-30 feet deep depending on water levels, and never caught anything. I would look for current and fish shallow in the evenings. Also there are some spots on the nearby cloquet river that may be good as well
