Guide Tipping

Recommended Posts

I will be up on Vermilion for the first time in a few weeks and hired a guide for a day. Is tipping a guide normal? If so how much is the tip 10-20%? This is the first time Ive used a guide so i dont know. any info on this would help. Thanks.

When I was guiding most of the time I would be handed a fifty or hundred bill as long as the client hooked into a musky. So I guess that is about 10-20%I never felt bad if I wasn't tipped, sometimes things don't go so well, and if the guide is not doing his job no tip needed. Like a waiter/waitress if the don't do their job so be it.Although most guides are normally going to put their best efforts forth.

When I have used guides I have always tipped 15-20 regardless of what we caught. There are some days when the guide has worked very hard for us,then the tip has increased another 30-40 bucks.I dont believe it is always the guides fault if you dont catch any or very few fish.We all know that sometimes the fish just dont cooperate.I think the other key to hiring a guide is not so much how many fish you catch, but also how much you learned fishing for that specie.I feel that 20-25 percent is a fair tip if the guide works for you and you learn a few things. When I fish in Mexico and catch a nice billfish,I always give him and his first mate a couple hondos.
