Algae and motors

The algae on my favorite lake is so thick right now that I am thinking about bringing the auger to drill a hole to jig through. What I am wondering is if all that algae could damage my motor at all?

It can if it clogs the water intakes. It happened to me while idling through some weeds with massive algae growth. The overheat light and alarm came on and I shut the motor off. Trolled back to shallow water, hopped out and cleaned off the algae then trolled back out to open water and started her up again. Got home and flushed the motor.
