"Force " motor

I got a friend that is looking to buy a 17' Spectrum with a 90 horse Force motor on it. His biggest concern is that if something happens to this motor, will they be around in a few years, are they still around, or how easy will the parts be to get ahold of?

Mercury, quit building the Force engines back around 2000 I believe. So as for them being around, they aren't. Depending on what year it is, parts may be tough to come across already. If it's one of the Merc era motors, I think parts are mostly availible, but if it's a Chrysler vintage, parts(most) are gonna be tough to come by.

Even with the Mercury brand they were still Chrysler parts built.

They are NOT known to be reliable motors, unless price is very cheap I would try another boat.

The boat is gonna run round' $4,500 somewhere in that ball park. So I hope he finds this information usefull.

Valv knows what he's talking about and my experience completely echos his comments. Despite naming them "Force" they should have been named "Farce". I'd suggest your friend looks for another deal.

My only experience with a Force is a 50 on the back of a 16'6" Bluefin. Pushes that boat around just fine and the only work on it in the last 10+ years was an impeller.

I would in no way consider any boat, especially used, pushed with one of those outboards. A sail would be more dependable.

Parts are still available, I rebuild one last year. They can be found on line from a number of sources. A 90 hp force is equal to about a 65 horse merc in performance. For the money, the advice on avoiding the Force is sound. That motor is worth maybe $200 if it works well, Force just gets no respect in the market.

Wag, I have a BRAND NEW Lund for $ 4800 in the Boats for sale section, why in the world do you want to waste $ 4500 for an old Quantum with a Force on it ?????

If you were talking $ 500.00 I would agree, but no more than that.

It would take over $500 dollars in gas to go down and see the boat. Well, were only about 6 1/2 hours away.

Sorry Valv, Nice looking boat though.

Anyhow, based on FMers vote against the "FORCE" , Steve is now looking at a 93 Bayliner, 19' w/ 115 Merc Cruiser
