Boresighters - Are they worth it?

Flash

Question

I was thinking of purchasing a boresighter and was wondering if they are worth it or are they not accurate and a waste of money. Also, wondering what kind would you recommend to use for Shotguns with Rifled Slug Barrels.

Thanks,

You should post this in the hunting or shooting forums.

Boresighters get you close - 'on the paper' is the popular saying. They do not sight in your gun accurately, they get it close enough to the bullseye that you can see where your shots hit on the paper, and you fine-tune from there. They work really well for that purpose. But you still have to shoot them.

If you have a lot of guns and/or are chaning scopes a lot, a boresighter is definately worth it. If you're only sighting in 1 or 2 guns you might be just as well off finding someone (or a gun shop) with a boresighter.

If all you're doing is sighting in a slug gun, get some cheap slugs and shoot at a 20-25 yard target. After you get close at that range, move out to 50 yards and shoot some more, then move to 100. Don't worry about fine-tuning until you get out to 100 yards or so, just get close at the shorter ranges. And don't worry about fine tuning until you shoot the ammo you will hunt with - different guns like different bullets, and you should experiment to see what shoots the best through your gun. Hope this helps, good luck.
