Boat Cover Question

I recently purchased a Lund 1800 Fisherman, The rig is used, but only 2 years old, and in excellent condition. It came with a factory Lund cover, that has some defects. I am looking to replace it. My question is, What kind of material would you recommend for this type of boat cover and what kind of tie downs would you have installed on it. I am looking to have it custom made. I will be trailering the rig often and for long distances and need a cover that will stand up to the elements of trailering. The rig is garaged kept when at home and during the winter months, but I want a good cover that I wont have problems with. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

There is a material available called Aqualon. It is waterproof except for the stiching. If there is someone in your area that custom sews boat covers, this is the material I would reccommend. It is tough enough to leave on the boat while trailering and will keep out the weather. As for fasteners, D-rings sewen to the cover and either rope or bungee cords holding it to the trailer seem to work the best.

I've got a cover made out of "Top Gun" material. Its 7 years old and still looks great. It sits in the sun all summer long on the lift.

I have a Lund Pro-Track cover with the snaps. I have had virtually all of the cheaper covers and I love this cover. I live at the end of a dusty road and when snapped no dust gets into my boat. I have heard that canvas shops can make a snap cover better than one that came with my boat, so you might check the local shops. Once and a while a snap comes apart and a kit is around 7-8 bucks and the repair is simple. One other thing I like about the snaps is you don't have to crawl around or under the trailer. Like you, my boat is in the garage when not on the water, In the winter I take my snap cover off the boat, fold it neatly and bring it into the house. I ordered a cheap cover from Wal-Mart on line that covers the boat in the garage during the winter. This cover comes off easily when I work on the boat and saves the snap cover and was a little over 40 bucks.

Actually, although I have a cover, I am actually looking for one that will leave the bow deck uncovered so that I do not have to take off the trolling motor and my electric anchor when I put the cover on. Also, I like to leave the motor uncovered. I have seen some of these covers on the newer Lund boats sold by Crystal Pierz. I think they are also snap on covers. Anyone knows how much they cost and how I could get them for a Mr Pike 16? Thanks!

I don't know where you're located but the Lunds comming out of Shakopee CP you might be seeing are probably custom fit snap covers made by Ericsons accross the street. He does a great job, great material (TOP GUN) & approx. $450.00 for a 18' Fisherman.

So are the snaps something that they will do to to install on the boat?

They are called Mooring Covers, if you add the bow cover, you can leave them on boat while is at the dock or lift on the lake, so if it rains it won't fill with water.

Mr. Pike has a track that goes around the outside of the boat, just below the gunwales. It's very easy to install the male portion of the snap in this track and align it to the cover. I don't know when Lund added this track to their boats but you should easily be able to determine if you have it. If you do then you can order a cover from Lund or have one made.

So those covers without covering the bow deck are called mooring covers?

Anyone tried the small hooks riveted to the strip about a foot below the top of you Lund. Haven't looked at a new Lund boat so maybe they do not have that rib anymore. If the boat has these, it works better than snaps. Use elastic rope strung thru the loops on cover, then just hook rope in hooks riveted to this rib. Clear as mud, huh? Wish I could show a picture!! jps
