Using a Lowrance Green box on hard water??

I was out at the Monticello flea market recently and picked up an old Lorwance Fish Lo-K-Tor really cheep. I don't need it in my boat but bought it thinking maybe it would work on the hard water that hopefully will come soon. (Wishful thinking!!) Has anyone ever tried this. After buying a new auger last year, the wife is holding tight on letting me get a new locator. Thanks for any input.

I've seen this post many times and I always like to reply because I have used my dad's old green box for hardwater the last couple years. The green box works great for marking depth and will even read through most ice with a little bit of water. It's a little difficult to read your bait but turning the gain way up and setting the supression right, you can read your bait if you jig it a little.

Last winter I was fishing 30 fow and marked a fish at 15. I had the gain turned down to just read the bottom and read fish so I could not see my bait on the screen but I already knew where I was. So I turned up the gain and reeled up to where I marked the fish. Seconds later I felt the bite and pulled in a crappie.

Now this is by no means as good as an FL-18 or LX-3, but it has done the trick at a fraction of the cost (free for me). I've already decided that my big ice fishing purchase next year is one of the above mentioned units, but using the green box is by far better than nothing and will definitely suffice until you can upgrade to one of the newer units.
