magellan mapsend topo vs mapsend lakes

Mike Richards

Question

I have a magellan meridian gold. Want to use it mostly for fishing but also for some navigation and the wife wants to try geocaching. With that in mind is there enough lake info on the mapsend topo software to make it useful for fishing? I would prefer not to have to buy both products if i dont have to.

I have the Meridian Platinum as does a friend. He has the topo program but from what I have seen, I am going to buy the lakes program. One thing I did, was bought my MapSend off of hsolist. Got it for half of what the stores wanted before they even had it. I know that doesn't support the local guy but saving almost $100 bucks can put a lot of minnows in the bucket.

I have the mapsend topo, it shows all roads and lakes and streams very well, and of course topo, but shows no lake depth contours. I have the gold also, and its a great unit.

I forgot to mention before. I did buy the map card that you can buy at Gander etc. for about $10. You can then access maps online and print them. You can also make waypoints on them and get the readings to put into the gps. I have only used it a few times but at $10 a year, it might be cheaper than buying software that is outdated before you buy it.

just a follow up to my post in case others have same question. I settled on the mapsend topo since it seemed it would suit both my fishing and other activities and I'll give you this advice. In the store and magellan HSOforum the software is $145. I bought it on hsolist for $45 including shipping. The kicker is that it was advertised at the older mapsend topo (the 2d) one and when it arrived it was the brand new mapsend topo 3D. It seems to work very well although it doesnt show navigational bouys. This isnt a problem for most places i fish but on rainy lake it would be nice to have that info. I may still end up purchasing the download version of the mapsend lakes next season so that i can download the lakes i need on memory card and still use the topo info on the memory card at the same time.
