Need help building canoe rack...

Powerstroke

Question

Hey FM folks, this winter I purchased a utility trailer from Val withthe goal of making it a canoe hauler. I've completely redone the trailer and its legal and roadworthy. Now my problem is with building a canoe rack for up to 4 canoes by June 25th.

Trailer is 4.5'x7' and currently doesn't have a rear gate, but I'm working on that too. I would hope the rack could be removable, but not mandatory. I can't weld, so unless you have fabrication materials and want to help I need to be able to bolt things together or make it out of wood.

Any thoughts...you can also email me at ahamilton (at) mn (dot rr (dot) com

The Gander Mountain in Bloomington has a trailer with a canoe rack on it outside the store (lyndale and 98th). I would just try to copy it. It's not that expensive to have a shop weld up a steel frame rack for canoes if you get the steel yourself and cut all the pieces. This would be a much better option that using wood. Discount Steel north of downtown MPLS is a good place to get steel pretty cheap, then go out and get a grinder to use for cutting. Put a coat of Herculiner on the steel after priming it and it will last a long time.
