Making your own muskie lures???

Recommended Posts

All I use is a buck knife, spraypaint, sandpaper, and a drill gun. All you gotta do is make the lure the way you want it with the knife and then sand it down with the sandaper so it looks nice.

After that you screaw the eye peaces in and then you paint it the way you want it. Last thing I do is put the hooks on.

It normally will take me about 10 minutes to carve and sand the lure. Another 2-3 minutes screwing the circle thingys for the hooks to be on(also use wood glue.) Then when I paint I like to tie the lure with fishing line somewhere outside where there is some wind so the lure spins around so it makes it really easy to paint and not mess up. Its actually really easy. You can use lots of different kinds of wood too. I like pine cause its light and easy to work with. You can also drill out the middle of the lure and put BB's in there so it rattles!!!

Im gonna post some pics up soon so you guys can tell me what you think and give me some ideas too.

Hope that helps a little!!!!!

I know a guy who lives near Hoffman, MN who has a small shop were he makes just about anything you want. He also sells some starter kits as well. I was just there to see it for the first time last week. Looks like fun. I didn't ask him how long he's been at it, but I think he's been making them for quite a while now. I'd go nuts if I had all that stuff for lure building at my disposal, lol. He also makes stainless steel leaders(solid & 7-strand) custom sizes rated from 90#-150#. I like titanium, but $10 a piece gets spendy, and his stainless leaders are nearly as thin and don't kink either. He sells a 24"-150# (150# clip and 200# welded-ring swivel) stainless leader for $3.79 a piece. His business e-mail is [email protected]. His HSOforum is currently down, but if you conact him(Jim), i'm sure he'll be able to answer some questions about start up.
