hanson
The last time I went catfishing, I was firing up the power auger and carefully filleting a golden shiner for cut bait. The bites were subtle. Sometimes the kitty would only pull the Ice Buster down a 1/2" and sit there. Set the hook and the rod is doubled over like you hooked a snag. Good stuff! So it was a little different to be out yesterday with the long rods fishing for these kitties. The action was very, very slow but the catfish hit with authority. Its always a good sign when the rod is nearly yanked from your grips when the kitty slurps your fathead. Channel Cat #1 was the smallest catfish I've caught in awhile and Channel Cat #2 was the very familiar 4 pounder, but looking kind of odd with 1 whisker missing. Both fish were released to fight again.A big thank you to Fisher Dave for providing great conversation while we were dodging raindrops and snowflakes. The weather gods surely aren't looking down on us favorably right now.The ironic thing is I had an awesome day icefishing channel cats in the rain, and a poor day open water fishing them in the snow! Fisher Dave
I had a great time myself.. I was happy we both caught fish witht he weather getting thrown at us... Only my cat was only about 20", and it had that funny white spot on its tail and long teeth.Did it ever get near 40 degrees? I really couldnt tell between the 40 mph wind gust at the end. All I know is it took a while to shake off the chill.. an insulated flannel, carhart jacket, and an insulated one piece is usually more than enough layers for the 1st day of May.. but what do I know.I think we would have hit a couple more if we could have been able to detect the bites in the wind gust.I wont complain, the conditions couldnt have been more wrong.. better days are yet to come!
