Advice for GPS/Nav System

TSCTSC

Question

Is there a GPS/Nav system that I can use to navigate the waters and also use in my car? If it could also be used internationally, that would also be a great feature. Can someone advise? Thanks.

I'm far from an expert, but I purchased a Lowrance LMS332c. It really doesn't care if it's in the car or not, or if the sonar is hooked up or not. I was told that folks were indeed mounting them in their cars. It does have a low detail map of the whole world built in,which does show most sities and major roads and highways. But you can buy map chips to give you incredible detail in the areas you want. I'd suggest checking out the Lowrance web site, and the Navionics web site. Navionics puts detailed maps on small chips. These folks, while lakes are a big part of their business, also provide products for the use you are talking about.

So in other words, this lowrance can load land and marine maps and functions as a GPS and a fishfinder?? That really sounds good. I went to the websites but I was so overwhelmed with the stuff that I could not figure out which product I should be looking at.

Correct. As I understand it, the unit has built in "low level maps" which in and of themselves can be used for driving directions. This unit takes some effort to master. If you feel overwhelmed don;t give up, everyone is overwhelmed at first about these things. The neat thing about the Lowrance, is you can download an "emulator" literally a virtual gps that you can play with on your computer screen. Unfortunatly, there are no instructions with it, you would almost have to download the manual too, all 200 pages. It took me 4 hours of proctice on the emulator before I took mine out on the boat, but the time was well worth the effort. I don't know where you are, but a community ed gps class or a Gander Mt. seminar on gps use might put you a light year ahead in your understanding of what you want.
