VHF Radio Question for small boats

Hi all

Does anyone know of a good handheld VHF radio that has external connections for antennas or external power? I am looking for a small radio but with the versatility to use a larger attenna on my personal boat, but can still be portable for going on trips and using with rental boats etc.

Another question regarding small hand held radios- Do I need one to fish the St.Louis River this spring? I thought I read the regulations for Lake Superior fishing and said something about being required for any waters connected to the Great Lakes??!

You don't need one for the St. Louis River or for St. Louis Bay. Once you get out onto Lake Superior, that is a different story.

I can't give you any models, but I believe all will have an external power jack. I would go to some stores and look at which ones have a removable antenna. (I've noticed most descriptions in the catalogs leave this feature out) If the antenna removes you can get an adapter for an external antenna.
