Will it work for ice fishing...yes. Will it work the greatest...probably not. The main thing you need to be concerned with is keeping the face of the transducer level with the water surface. Go and get yourself one of those little bubble levels from a hardware store and hot glue it to the top of the transducer. This will insure that you are getting the best possible reading. By doing so you should have no problem getting a bottom reading. Depending on how you set your gain you should also be able to see your bait while it is sitting still. You may not be able to watch it fall down the water column or keep track of it when you are jigging it though.

You will want to try and build some kind of arm to hold the transducer in the water once you get it level. Just something that will allow you to keep the transducer in one place once you get it level. Other than that, get a Vex style battery and something to mount the locator to and go fishing. Good luck with your Bird.
