questions on Strikemaster augers

DRH1175

Question

What have others found to be the difference between the 4 offerings availble for the 2hp models. The ultra, mag, Mag xl, and the new 4 blade that is out. Which blad set up seems to compliment the 2hp motor the best? Looking at 8" or 9" models.

I have the new 4 Blade version, I think the 3 Blade version is just as good though. I originally wanted the 3 Blade version but Cabela’s (Mitchell) did not have this year’s model. The yellow decompression button on the 2004 engines is a great feature. The only augers they had with this was the 4 Blade version. When my dad timed me it cut through 18” of ice in just over 6 seconds. I thought that was pretty good not that if the 3 Blade version took 8 or 9 seconds would be a big deal. I just wanted the decompression feature so I went with the 224 model.

Also on the 224 does it seem to break throw the ice at the bottom of the hole with no problems. Noticed on the 1 blade model you have to baby it a bit to get this part of the hole done.

I have a new Lazer Mag express with the two blades and I used it for the first time this past weekend. I'm very new to ice fishing but I thought the 2hp handled the ice very well with the two blades.

I wasn't concerned with being the first one done as long as I got through the ice so the new 4 blade was really not even considered. I did come across a carryover (I think since I couldn't find this auger on the SM HSOforum) 3HP discounted pretty well that I considered briefly due to the savings versus extra 1hp but in the end went with the lighter 2hp. (by the way I got the 8" auger after asking lots of people if I really shouldn't have the 9", but I never actually found a 9" either so that made the decision a bit easier)

The 2 HP is plenty of power for even a 10” size hole. As for the 4 Blade it goes through the ice so fast you don’t even hardly feel like you broke through the ice. But I would say that about any Lazer auger. I don’t think you can go wrong with any Lazer and they all use the same engine now. But I would recommend getting the latest model with the decompression feature.

Thanks I want to make sure I pick the right blade configuration. Had my eye on the 224 or ultra. but want to buy something I will be completly happy with. Also do the blades stay sharp on the ultra and 224. Obviously the 224 is so new that it may be hard to respond on.
