Chubby Darters ?

After reading about them I went out and got the 1 1/2 and 2"

I was watching one in 22 fow with my camera,tried directly to my line and one with a split ring. The dater would just raise up and fall down, no darting or swiming. Question is you that have them do they do the same thing or am I doing something wrong?
