Interesting day with the Underwater camara!

I had a fun day with the underwater camara. Had a consistant action of pike coming through and ended up catching most of them. But I saw a few interesting things. The first thing I saw was a pike chasing a perch trough the silty bottom. It was like I was watching the movie "Tremers". The pike was really under the bottom survace for at least 5-6 feet very snake like. The second thing I saw was after I released a small pike it must of swam straight down to the bottom in 12 feet of water because after I rebaited I looked at the camara and the pike was literally sticking head first in the bottom, half the pike was in the bottom and the second half was sticking straight up off the bottom. It just sat there for a minute or two with its head in the bottom then swam off. I then later lost my ice scoop down the hole and it landed scoop up in the bottom right in front of the camara, and I was able to retreive it with a chubbing darter. It is amazing the things you can learn with a camara! Fun Day!

Andy, aren't those camera's a blast? I've posted here before of what I saw while perch fishing on Leech, I'll give you the short version. Hundreds of perch on the camera, all of a sudden they begin to scatter, several of the perch dive directly into the mud on the bottom of the lake. The northern cruises through, a couple of seconds later the perch come out of the muddy bottom and swim away. I would never have believed it if I hadn't seen it.

Wow I saw something similar once when I was watching a guy spearing for northerns. We were sitting in the house and a 5 pound northern came in. He threw the spear and missed. The hole got full of mud for about 5 minutes. We walked outside to let it clear up. Came back in and saw the northerns tail sticking straight out of the mud with the head burried. He then thew the spear and managed getting it with two tines. The fish had never been hit on the initial throw.

The camera is a great addition to the ice fishing experience. It is amazing what you learn about fish behavior watching them on the camera. Last year I was fishing the St Croix and had a unique experience with a sturgeon. I was jigging a swedish pimple with 1/2 a crappie minnow on it, watching on the camera. Here comes this sturgeon right at it so I let the lure fall to the bottom hoping he would just swim by. He gets right over the lure, and does a vertical descent onto the it and starts vacumming the bottom. He was sucking in sand and dust and my lure. I ended up hooking him and the fight was on. He managed to tangle himself all up in the camera and I had a heck of a time getting that straightened out. I eventually landed him and took his picture and let him go. Abut a 30" fish. It was kind of cool.
