Killing Jiffy

perch65

Question

Can anyone help me get my Jiffy Model 30 3hp running right. When it was new it would kill during idle. I adjusted air/fuel screws and it starts and idles great. Now it will kill when it's put under load drilling holes. This is it's 2nd season and it's wearing on my patience. Oil mix is right, fuel cap vent is open, and I let it warm up well enough, I think. Thanks for any help.

Sounds like you have a bugger in the high speed metering jet.

Try dumping the fuel and letting a good dose of Sea-Foam soak in the carb over night. Then dump it out and refill it with clean fresh mix with a dose of Sea-Foam in it.

Before you refill the tank and after you dump the soaking juice blow out the carb with a air line. Don't shoot too much high pressure into the carb just medium pressure, so you do not blow out a gasket someplace.

While your at it check the pressure cap on the tank to be sure it is venting properly. Open the vent screw and blow through the top of the cap so you know it allows air into the system.

It couldn't hurt to change the spark plug too. I like to use a NKG instead of the Autolight plug. The Platinum Spitfire plug is a great plug and burns clean. Set the gap at 30.

I think Ed hit it perfectly... SeaFoam. I had 2 augers that would either not start well or would idle poorly. Used a medicine dispenser and shot a tablespoon of it in the carb, pulled it over about a half pull, shot some more in the carb, left it sit for a while, changed plug and fuel and it worked like a charm in both cases. Couldnt be happier.

Good Luck.

Since you said you tinkered with the idle screw you may need to re-set it after the flush and fill routine.

So grab a screwdriver and recruit a friend to join you on the ice. CAREFULLY turn in the screw tell it just touches the seat, do not bottom it out as it may damage the needle/seat.

Now back it out to 1 and 1/2 turns and start the motor. Allow it to warm up well, about 30 seconds or so. You want it good and warm so you know all things will be equal when you set it.

Now hand the screwdriver to your bud and have him slowly fine tuner the screw as you drill a fresh hole at full throttle. (Likely a slight turn to the left with the screwdriver at this point will hit the sweet spot and it will cackle and rock. But it could be a little +/- either way, it will let you know by the sound.)

Tiny adjustment is the plan, not 1/2 turns left or right.

As soon as you hear the auger kick in (RAAAAAAAAAAA) and rock under load your all set, stop there and call it a day.

Hopefully a flush and set will do it for you. If not you may need to get a carb kit put in. I really don't think that will be the case in such a young unit as yours.

Hope this helps.
