lepfrog
Can you tell me anthing about ice chisels? A guy told me the other day that if he hits the ice twice or more without going through it is safe to walk on. [Note from admin: Disclaimer form FishingMN.com - No ice should ever be considered safe to go on, even with a chisel test. Please use caution always when going on the ice and proceed at your own risk .]

frozen toes
That is my rule of thumb as well, but I also only go on known waters that are fairly shallow. If it really cracks when I get on it, I usually think twice. When I say crack I mean you can physically see the cracks shooting like a spiderweb, to me that kind of ice just isn't quite ready yet. The Grebe
I must be getting soft...or smart, because there has to be a little bit more criteria involved then 3 whacks with the chisel, before I go on it!A lake I was on yesterday took 4 good whacks with the newly sharpened chisel, before I got through, but if I wiggled up and down, the open water around the Bullrushes rippled pretty good.I thought, "Let me see? Chance of breaking through verses catching a bunch of stunted Sunfish, hummmm?" Needless to say I changed game plans pretty quick.I plan on trying it again this afternoon after the Vikes game, maybe it set up a little better during the night? If not, I'll wait till next time and try it again!
