bass from a canoe

Now thats a new one on me... I grew up 4 miles from Oxhide and never knew there was a decent bass population in it! Nice fish! Did the fish seem really easy to spook in that crystal clear water? the few times I was in there, you could watch the fish scurry away even as you approached with the trolling motor.

fishermn....your right on the fish spooking..i usually quietly paddle(standing) the shallows right into the lilly pads and can see the bass swimming away(telltale swirl or actually see the fish) as i approach but since i'm moving slowly,it doesn't seem to alarm them all that much and they return...it would be tough to do that with a 16' lund and a 40 hp!...lol!...ox hide's a great little large mouth sanctuary not a lot of fishing pressure that i've seen through the years(people apparently like the bigger waters)...no cabins(mining property)...15 minutes from my door...and the fish are there..very seldom dissappointed...jonny

Yeah I agree regarding the nice location/quiet lake, My family and In-laws still live up there, so looks like I will be trying oxhide for a little C&R bass fishing next time I am up that way. How is the population overall? Did you get a decent number of hits? Also, have you ever fished it for walleyes? I have heard they are in there...

fishermn....sorry about the delayed reply..i've found oxhide has a decent number of largemouth up to about 3 pounds...sometimes even larger...and as far as the "hits"..i usually never get skunked while going for the largemouth there..always seem to raise a few bass..i've never tried for walleyes there even though i know people who have caught some decent ones...I usually go for the bass or crappies...i'm a surface lure fanatic..."pop-r's","hula poppers",etc.work best for me.....crappies, i use a 1/32 ounce white jig (my favorite)...jonny
