Hey Reg!!! Fished Box Butte!

Are you talking about Merritt res.?
Haven't fished that one but do want too.
Me and my dad fished Box Butte res. west of Valentine, the day after Christmas day. Box Butte is north of Hemingford, we needed some fish for the freezer, we are Minnesota transplants also. We limited out friday, nothing big, went back the next day and caught a few. Caught them on sucker minnows, and are 10 tip-ups thats right 5 each its great.

We lived in the NE Panhandle for many years and spent many a day at Box Butte. Back then you were allowed 10 tip-ups each which was a blast on that lake because of all the pike. Things haven't changed as we caught a lot of pike but not real large. The lake also has walleye and blue gills. The gills were of fileting size but really hard to find in the winter. Of course, that was in the days before Mr. Vexilar became my good friend. I don't recall ever catching a walleye during daylight in the winter.

Vince, I am talking about Merritt, as well as the Refuge lakes (mostly Pelican--lots of Northerns). I mostly fish Merritt at night for crappies, with fair to poor success, but hey, why not be out? LOTS of people go out on Merritt at night, and it gets pretty social (hint: bring a bottle to share).

I have never fished Box Butte, but it sounds good. What did you limit on?

I am going up this weekend for four days. I'll post how the action was when I get back.
