Cherry Creek Fishin Report

Recommended Posts

Fished CC res. on 12-24 and 12-25. On wednesday fished from 10-1:30 and skunked. The retired dudes that live at the tower all had limits of nice crappie using fe-flys and tube jigs(red and white) but hit them early-i.e.before I got there!Ice 3-4" or less, kind of scary. Went back on christmas@ 6:30am and caught 2 nice perch and 1 decent crappie perch on minnows and crappy on fe-fly.Nobody was catchin much. Ice is thicker on other side of lake-6" am going to try out in the middle on sat.

Thanks for the report!!! Hopefully the Crappie will be a little bigger this year. I fished there last year a few times and did real well, but you had to go through a lot of smaller ones to get the big ones. Caught some nice perch too, one that was about 2 pounds!! I know what you mean, it can be a little scary out by the tower...

Thanks, Tim

I'm amazed there is ice out there at the tower already!! I've got to get out there! I too have seen the old timers there and have always done really well on micro jigs tipped with a minnow. It seems to weed out the smaller crappies and I usually fish about 30-50 feet away from the tower.

Been really getting on a great crappie bite
near the tower. Have to be careful that you do not fish in front as it is off limits for a distance of 60 feet out. Parks Rangers have put up signs and are placing flyers on vehicles in the parking lot that they will ticket ice fishing in front of the tower. You are okay if you stay just off the edge of either corner. According to one Park Ranger, this rule has been put into effect by the Corps of Engineers.
Was going to try it again this morning but the winds last night had pushed ice 4-6 feet up onto the beach. With that kind of ice motion during the night, the existing ice was probably not safe, so will wait for a couple of days. Weather we are having now should thicken up the ice.

Went to Cherry Creek This morning. Plenty of ice (5") by the tower. I didn't catch anything although my Vexilar was red all morning. I threw just about  everything I had at them but no luck. The old timers camped along the east part of the tower were catching crappies and perch, but I only saw one fish worth taking home, the rest were really small. I've had great luck there catching big crappies there before. Anyone know where they might be hiding?

It's spelled Fle-Fly. I bought a couple of those fabled jigs at the bait shop by Cherry Creek. I was surprised to see that they are really just a small jig head with a bit of yarn on them. Not sure why they seem to work so good at Cherry Creek. Although I noticed the guys catching Crappie seemed to using a multiple jig drop line with really really small flies on them. Maybe that's why the caught so many Crappies in the 4-6 inch range while I git skunked using minnows and larger jigs. Has anyone every fished Cherry Creek at night?

Fished this morning before work. Almost a full sheet, my buddy dragged us out to the middle of the lake to one of his GPS spots. We went out a long ways, the ice was 3-2 1/2 inches most of the way.

Avalanche, have you been out there recently? wondering when the big crappies are going to move towards the spillway - or at the very least - reveal their secret location. I'm going to head to Douglas tomorrow.

Mscottcody,

What's the word on Douglas? I was thinking about Boyd tomorrow, but I am always more interested in panfish than I am trout, and trout is all I've caught on Boyd so far this year. maybe I'll see you at Douglas? I was planning to get out at dawn...

Reg-
I should have asked around. I was out there on the South end Saturday morning just before sun up. By the time my buddy could get his rod and reel set up and dog settled down, I had 6 trout caught in the first ten or so minutes. Lots of trout and Perch until about 8:30. then it just stopped. we left about 10:15 with only a couple more bites. I was suprised by how many people were out there! But, at least for us, if you weren't there at sun up, not much doing. I'm with you on the trout. Sure wish I could get into some Walleyes or Crappies somewhere.
