Trophy Deer Areas in MN

Recommended Posts

Well, I read through a majority of the posts on the 'Support minimum rack size' thread. While I agree with some of the posts, I disagreed with a majority of them. Minnesota continues to be one of the top producing states for P&Y and B&C deer. From 1991 to 2000, Minnesota ranked 5th on the list -

A solution to most of the arguments on the previous thread would be to have designated trophy areas within the state. While most hunters would object to something like this, trophy deer hunters would certainly be in favor of it. My suggestion would be to take the areas of the state that the DNR has several management hunts - Afton State Park, William O'brien State Park, St. Croix State Park and several others - and designate these as 'Trophy Areas'. The DNR can still manage the deer in these areas within the guidelines set forth by the big game biologists, but also manage them as trophy areas. Some of the parks are in the top producing counties in Minnesota, so this would provide for a good starting base. These hunts wouldn't interfere with the tradition of deer camps, but would allow trophy hunters the chance to draw one of the most coveted tags in the state.
