Theft at Sinai

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to leave a note for the crooks that stole my stuff out of my boat. When I find you I hope you are behind bars where I cannot reach you!!

For the few honest people left, consider this a public notice. DO NOT leave anything at Lake Sinai overnight if you treasure it. I was at Lake Sinai on Friday night. I had blown the bearings out on one side of my trailer so it was too late to fix that night so I left the boat overnight. I took out everything I thought was of value but these crooks found some stuff. I lost an old Mercury thruster trolling motor, they took an 1968 Evinrude 6hp, a broken pair of binoculars, trolling battery, anchor and line, and two small ropes I use to tie to the dock. It was two pieces of rope for god's sake!! I do realize that I was the stupid one to think that there is not such pitiful people out there but I was wrong. I guess it doesn't help any having the sheriff of Brookings county living 2 miles from the ramp.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Everyone that lives in that area needs to keep an eye open for the 6hp motor to be for sale somewhere. Especially when duck season comes around, it seems like that time of year those small motors sell well. Maybe you could post this again in October and ask people to look for it. Best of luck to you the rest of the season. The "fish gods" will get even with dishonest people like them. I hope he looses a 12# walleye right at the net!

The rope part is really nuts..... geez, what pathetic people.

I had an older flasher fall off my fish trap while coming off an Iowa lake last winter after dark. Didn't miss it for a couple days, and have several more I bought up years ago real cheap when the LCRs started coming. It had my name and phone number on it and figured if somebody called..... I would just tell them to keep if they didn't have one. never heard anything. now, if I ever spot it on the ice (highly customized setup), I think I would be more inclined to be rather ascertive.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you guys have had. I'm sure we all have run into more than one @$$ in our lives, some people just can't be happy unless they're making someone else miserable.

I'd like to tell you about a time when I was bear hunting up by Bemidji. It's kind of a long story but here goes:

I use totes to store my equipment and my hunting clothes and had left the totes in the back of my truck. It was parked about 1000 yards from my bait site and between trips to the site someone actually ripped off one of the totes out of the back of my truck. I was so totally [PoorWordUsage]ed at humanity-I couldn't believe anyone would have the gall to do such a thing.

I looked through the totes that were still there and realized that the person who did it must have just pulled off the highway and grabbed the first tote he or she could reach and took off. The tote that was missing had a bunch of tree spikes and other equipment, but it wasn't the most valuable one for sure. I had totes full of expensive gortex clothing and other stuff that could have been stolen just as easily.

Anyway, I took off to go hunting that evening and on my way out to the bait site a tote full of clothes blew out of the bed of my truck. When I got to my parking spot I noticed right away it was missing (I always dress after I arrive at my hunting site) and knew it had been there when I left the house.

So, I turned around immediately and retraced my steps. I found part of the plastic tote, broken on the highway, but the rest of the tote and the clothing was nowhere to be found.

I was really cussing and down on the world for being such an aweful place when I got a phone call. It was my wife. Seems my buddy from Omaha, NE called and he'd gotten a call from someone that had found my clothes on the highway. My omaha freind had a coat identical to one I owned- nice, wool coats we bought at same time- and we'd somehow gotten them mixed up the last time we'd hunted together. He had written his name and phone number on the inside of his and this guy that found the stuff had called him in Omaha and said he had found all these clothes.....

The guy could so easily have kept those clothes! He was my size and everything would have fit him; he was a hunter and had to know that there was about $500.00 worth of clothing there. But, he did the honest thing.

Must have felt so good to have been able to get those clothes back to me. I know I was happy, but I'll bet he rode the feeling from that act of kindness for a month. He wouldn't even take a reward. I sent him a gift certificate to a restaurant in the mail, but I'm sure the real reward for this guy was knowing he'd done such a good thing. It's crazy how I ran into two such completely different people on the same day like that. I wonder how long the theif enjoyed his stolen goods? He probably doesn't even hunt and threw the stuff out when he got home.

Sorry to ramble, it's getting late.
