I notice you fish the glacial lakes region a lot in SD. I am originally from SD (now in the cities) and have fished the Clark and Lake Preston area quite a bit. I was wondering if you have heard of anyone walking out yet on Waubay or any of the small sloughs in the area. I am after perch. I have also heard a tip that a lake south of waubay may be very hot this year with a lot of big perch. I am hoping to make 3-4 weekend trips out there and any idea on the first walkable ice would be great so I can start planning. Thanks

I have not made the run to the hills yet myself but reports have some ice on the bays. I have heard 4" on some less on others.

We need some cold to set the ice up, it has been too nice for much safe ice to form.

Just be cautious!

Try calling the bait shop in Webster and see what they know is a good idea.

Good luck!

My grandpa lives up just miles from waubay lake and they have been fishing. I dont think they have been out on waubay yet since it is a pretty big puddle of water. I know of a lake near waubay w/ pretty big perch...Reetz, they now have a limit of 5 perch only one over 10in. and for wally's its only one wally and must be over 28in!!!!

Backwater eddy,
Reetz lake is the lake w/ the strict limits... lynn lake is also near waubay, this is a great place for catch decent sized walleye and saugeye. Although when fishing you catch lots of little wally's and once and a while get a nice one.

Lynn Lake was the one with all the access problems (private land dispute) last year - wasn't it? Or was it Long Lake?

Hope you guys pop in to the South Dakota Forum once and a while. Hopefully we can all share some tips on fishing spots over there.

Would you like a Glacial Lakes SD Regional Forum to talk about fishing in your area?

Rick I think a SD Glacial Lakes Region Forum would be a wise move. I get a lot of email asking for information for that region so I know there are tons of avid anglers in that region who could contribute once the word gets out.

Yes there are concerns with water/ice access points in SD.

Due to the expansion of many lake systems into sloughs that are on private lands and many land owners are a bit touchy about access rights. It has more to do with the state and farmers then it has to do with anglers and farmers.

Rule #1 up is ask if you can fish, and if that is impossible access by means of the ice if it is connected to a state accessible waterway, or gain access by means of a County road or state road ditch onto the ice. Any land bridge separating a body of water to another is considered trespassing if you cross private lands.

Many land owners are now setting up pay to access ramps to compensate for some lost income due to farm land flooding. They have to pay state tax's on land under water so they have a justifiable concern to how to make it pay. They are not greedy to do so, it is there right to do so, and they don't soak you bad to use it.

Stay on trails and don't litter so they are willing to see us all come back again.

Many of the new hot spot waters are on private land acreage so be sure to ask and in my experience they are willing to let you in if you are courteous and show respect.

You will be surprised to see how willing they can be to see you once they get some fresh fish for supper?
