the bay or the islands?

myself and a few friends are looking to take a weekend trip to ice fish either the apostle islands or chequamegon bay in two weeks, anyone have a conditions report? areas to avoid to not go swimming, any help is greatly appreciated

I would recommend you stop at River Rock Bait in Ashland and they will give you the most up to date ice report. The Washburn side of the Bay finally froze over on Monday of this week, so I would use EXTREME caution on that side. The pack ice on the Ashland side is 6-8" thick, but once you get past that, it is different ice. I would guess 5" or more by the weekend. Over by the S-Curve off Bono Creek also just froze on Monday. Good luck!

No problem, I'm going to check ice off Houghton tonight, I'll report back. I've heard S-Curve has 4"+ already! I love this cold weather!

There is 2" of ice off of Houghton Point as of last night, then went and checked off the Sioux and there was lees than an inch from there to Bayfield.

so sounds that whole side of the bay is taking its time to freeze up, where is the ore dock i hear mentioned often?

Yes, closer to Washburn, the ice gets thicker as you go towards the S-Curve. The Oredock is right in Ashland, directly to the east of the Marina. You can park at the public boat launch right next to it by the campground (Kreher Park). Don't be afraid to stagger tip-ups at all depths of the water column out there. Good luck!
