Interesting discovery about water indicator

As you have seen on here one of my boats has a 97 60hp Merc tiller on it. For years I have had a piece of wire hanging from my cables by the tiller handle. Almost every time I am in my boat I run the wire up the water stream hole to make it run better. I thought it was spiders or some kind of critter nests. Well the other day it would only run when I had the wire in it. I took off that rubber hose that is about a foot long. (hang onto fitting that goes through the cowling so it doesn't drop in the river) Well it had a big hunk of gunk in it that I was just pushing around. I blew on it and cleared the gunk out. It did look like years of cobwebs condensed into one rubbery chunk. It runs water out now like it has never done before. I probably did some unneeded impeller changes over the years too. Just thought someone might be able to use this info... I know I have gotten great info from this site. Thanks.
