Jake isn't the only one to take early carp on little plastics. This year 1.5 inch white twisters have worked well for us. Also instant oatmeal dough balls, both on 1/32 or 1/16 crappie jigs fished real slow on the bottom. We haven't take a 20# but we have pushed 15# real hard a couple of times this year already. No bolt strikes yet this year either, bite has been crappie soft to this point.

For lakes: 1-2-3 would be Harriet Calhoun and Nokomis (not counting the restaurant house pets on Minnetonka of course). The Mississippi is also dependable for fish generally up to well over 10 pounds on most outings.

The docks are in place on Calhoun. There and on Harriet and Nokomis there are good spots to scout the outside weedline to check for cruising carp.

Thanks for info ... I will try out calhoun never did before ... had done river last week .. nothing over 10+ mark.. Im looking for my PB for over 20+mark this year...

mate ... i do CNR and not into netting carps . check my other post all fish caught were with rod and reel , were back into water after pics..

there's enough profit in taking carp from the city lakes that it attracts commercial fishermen?

carp taste bad enough as is, but they gotta be especially nasty from some of these city lakes

I thought that profession was pretty much dead these days

I would have figured the only carp netters in MN were the U of M eradicators and researchers (Dr. Sorenson and his "Judas fish" deal)

As I said; when they were at Lake Volney they had a tractor trailer with live wells from end to end. They were looking for big fish to transport down south to ponds so people can pay to catch them.

I seen carp being sold in asian grocerys in minneapolis and st paul, dont know if it was from these lakes .. the fish here is much contaminated and dont know what fun in eating carp.

Other think is true too .. NC,SC , PA there are lots of paylakes ..where people pay to fish for carp and catfishing ..this i know for fact. not surprised you heard them hauling over fish ..

Commercial netting of carp (and other rough fish) in MN is a real industry. The Outdoor Channel even has a reality show about it. http://outdoorchannel.com/bottom-feeders

The carp from here are mostly sold in other markets where different ethnic communities value them more than the average Minnesotan does.

Also, while we might consider carp (and other bottom feeding fish) as dirty fish, they generally contain fewer contaminants than predator fish like pike, bass, and walleyes. They tend to carry contamination at about the same levels as panfish taken from the same waters.

It works like this. All the fish have the same amount of contaminants. When fish A eats fish B all the contaminants of fish B are absorbed into fish A. Every time fish A eats a fish B it gets more contaminants. Fisk C comes along and eats some A and B fish and gets higher contaminant levels. People eat A,B, and C fish. So women of child bearing shouldn't eat a lot od fish A,B,and C because all the contaminants for eating those fish will stay in her and her baby will start life at a contaminant leave as mom.

Carp feed off the bottom and don't eat fish A,and C.

Oh yea. The fish they were taking to the market were the Buffalo.

They did this to Nokomis or Haiwatha a few years back. The DNR was trying to reduce the carp population. I believe most of them became fertilizer, but I could be wrong. It was in the Star Tribune

Another day another double. I handed tom my rod so I could get the anchor up and not fight the fish in the area we were catching them.

It was easy to catch 8-12 of these a day in August.

This is where they went.

Where else in Mn could you go out fishing and catch 8-12 fish this size day after day? Look at the fishermen's faces. They do not annoyed by catching a nuisance fish.

These fish were around 18 lbs each if I remember right.

Yes that was Blue Kayak. He is a good guy. I was keeping an eye on him to see how much a Carp would pull him around before he landed it. Kind of a down sized Nantucket sleighride.

That is a nice setup he has and it takes down and fits in his van.
