MaxGoldman
As far as the reels with free spool, there's no way to prevent line jumping off the reel, less line on the spool won't do anything from my experience, I hardly have any of my spool filled with 100 yards of 2lb on mine and it'll still come off. When fishing outside, you reel up, the water you brought up reeling freezes line to the last couple guides and then when you hit free spool to get back down, if you don't see the line is frozen right away, the free spool lets line out making it loose which can find that gap on the spool causing it to find it's way off the spool, since at that point you unfreeze the guides and the line is tight, but it's tight around the knob on the outside. I've never had this happen inside with a heater on though since the freezing is really the cause of line getting out of control. Once it happened to me enough I've learned to know what to expect and you just prevent it all and it's smooth sailing.
