Most hunters are passionate about their deer hunting!!!! Whether its big deer, not enough deer, wolves, CWD, etc. every deer hunter loves their deer!!! We need to just be respectful of each others opinions so we can continue the discussions and hopefully learn something.

Minnesota is a big diverse state with lots of different habitat, different deer populations, different hunter attitudes, its impossible for the DNR to please everybody.

smsmith, good luck with your deer density pursuit. As you can see, people on this site are just as passionate as the people on that other quality deer site that you frequent (I 'assume' you're the same guy over there). You are right, that is the best site around for food plot and habitat info.

landdr, is rocky mountain juniper really that much better than white cedar?? I have 50 white cedar ordered for this spring to plant as a buffer/shield between a gravel road and one of my food plots. I'm concerned that the juniper wouldn't get tall enough. Also I'll be calling you next week after I get back from my fishing trip, I want to see more pheasants!!!! I just happen to have one of your orange habitat sheets in my shop, the discussion on the other post got me thinking that I need to go the extra mile, I'm not getting it done on my own, at least not the way I'd like to see it.

Blackjack...I agree with you 150% on respecting opinions. As smsmith said...sometimes we just have to agree to disagree, and then be gentlemen about it.

White cedar - If white cedar, or anything that starts with "white", is planted in small numbers, you will definitely need to protect the tree. Deer and other critters will browse it right off. Also, white cedar tend to grow a lot taller and loose their bottom boughs, not always but often do, which will reduce the "buffer" you want and also let wind and snow blow right on through. Not a risk I would recommend to take.

Black Hills Spruce and Rocky Mt Juipers do not have any of the issues listed above.

You can certainly plant your 50 White Cedar, but I would back them up with one of the other two just for insurance.

Thanks for the question. smile
