ive heard that the red/black metallic powerbaits worked pretty good up in the sucker bay area last summer, it would be worth a shot
also try carolina style rig with your slip nose weight about 18" ahead of your plastic, this worked well for me, the weight keeeps er down but dosent restrict the movement of the worm so much, if you use a small hypodermic needle you can inject air into the bait and it becomes more bouyant, it seems to create a more realistic presentation.

Basscaster,
I think I touched on this a little bit in your e-mail, but I'll try to be a little more specific.
Jig-n-pigs - Black/blue or pumpkinseed/chartruese

Worms - 8 to 10 inch versions. Watermelon or red shad.

Tubes - smoke/red flake and pumpkinseed

Floatworms - white or bubblegum

spinnerbaits - white, chartruse, golden shiner colors. Gold blades work well.

Hope this helps you out a little more. Good luck smile.gif

Pitch the edges of the bog mats with the jigs/worms/etc... Try the rice with a weedless lure like a jawbreaker (I like the black/silver the best smile.gif that can flutter into the holes for some real hogs. Superline is a must...If you're set on using plastics, toss a BA-Hawg or something simular in the same areas...size is far more important than color, but try to use something with a darker profile. 5-7" plastics would be key.

I've become a pretty devoted Power Bait user. I like a wide variety of their baits, but especially like to fish a mushroom jig-head with a six-inch worm. Black, blues, purple, motor oil, all seem to work fine.

I will be heading to Leech for the Pro/AM Bass Tour June 28th, 2003 and I have never fished Leech before. I may enter as a Pro (wife says stay an AM) but my boat only goes 40 mph so I don't think Boy bay or Headqarters bay should be an option. I struggled with the wld rice on Pokegama last year and I later developed confidence with a Moss Boss in the slop on Minnetonka. I want to use my heavy Ahab inshore spinning rod and my Team Daiwa S 3500CU to get distance over the rice beds with the Moss Boss. Am I crazy? I currently use 10# Power Pro braid and I'm thinking of spooling up with 14# Ironsilk as an alternative. I have used my lighter flippin stick spooled with 20# Sensation or 30# Power Pro on a Curado SF but I can only get about half of the distance compared to the spinning gear. I want to try looking for deep structure close to the Walker access to compensate for the fact that I will be dead last to any of the prime rice spots. The "book" says the bass tend to congregate in the rice in Steamboat, Boy, and Headquarters but I want to try deeper in Agency bay instead. Am I wasting my time and should I just follow the "book"?

I can't give you any advice based on experience. But from everything I've heard, I would go by "the book" as you put it. I've heard that it doesn't pay to fish any deeper than about 5 feet of water, and in those typical Leech Lake areas.

I've never heard of anyone targeting them in Walker or Agency Bays. Not that they aren't there, but I would think you would be lucky to connect if you're fishing that area.

I fish Leech quite a bit and talk to many others that do.........Heres my advice: HEAVY cover of any kind.....FLIP heavy 1/2 to 1 ounce jigs(or heavier) in dark colors into any openings in matted weeds or wild rice........Check reeds near other weed beds.Other large plastics...8 to 10 inch worms, BIG 5inch tubes, BIG creature baits........Usually 1-5 foot of water......FORGET most sparse weeds or relatively open water.......Most bass are not stupid enuff to venture out far for fear of being eaten by BIG Northerns or Musky........HEAVY line, 20-50 lb test,.......Boy bay,Steamboat bay,Welsh bay,Shingobee and any areas you can find relatively heavy weeds.Topwaters in rice beds early in the season...Very shallow water in many cases.....Hold on tight...LOL

Thanks for the advice guys. I was hoping I could zig while the others zag but Leech may have enough room for 100 teams to beat the banks and slop without being on top of each other. I am mainly concerned with the fact that my boat only goes 45 mph and I don't want to get lost or lose too much time by heading to the east side of the lake. I fish Minnetonka almost daily duing the summer so post a note in the metro section if you need Tonka help or a fishing buddy.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
