So we headed out this am knowing Option #1 was going to be hit or miss. We really just wanted to know where it stood at this point with the weather we had been having. We were met by a Police officer at the unloading spot and let him know we were fishermen. He said be safe and we told him that wasn't going to be a problem.

We traveled light today. Only one auger (yup my gator that didn't work last week) and chisel with our gear in one sled. We reached the waters edge and saw a small deer had been on just prior to our arrival (fresh tracks). Mark chipped his way out a bit and it looked/sounded OK. We went to drill a hole to check depth and the auger didn't work again. :? :?

I thought I had the problem narrowed down to the charger and I got a new one yesterday and charged up the battery until the light was green. After this morning it was obvious it wasn't the charger.

This was OK for now as we knew the ice was thin enough to chip thru if it was safe enough to fish. Mark opened the hole up a bit and we measured 3". A little further out another hole 3". Even though it looked like dump we had decent thickness so far. Next check the ice was cracking on Mark and the spud went thru fairly easily. We turned back, it wasn't good. At least we knew where we stood.

Now where to go. We had an option north and an option south. The North option is where we were last week and we knew it had 5" of ice. What we didn't know is if it had open holes for us to jump in as the auger was down and 5" is a lot of chipping. We opted for option #2 south as we knew Jiffy had holes there and if they were taken we just keep going south and go home. Not a big deal.

We arrived at the pond around 8 and headed out in the slop. It really wasn't that bad. We fished our way out to the hole and found some huge Gil's along the way. Jiffy you really need to thin those schools out more. The place is loaded with them. We did notice some other holes, 10", that I knew wasn't Jiffy so someone must have been there Friday. We ended up keeping a bunch of fish for Mark as his in-laws from Wisconsin are out and he wanted to give them a fish fry. They love pan-fish as any mid-western folk would.

We hit the road around 11:30. All in all a decent trip that was salvaged by option#2. It's great to have a plan isn't it.

Sounds like a good trip! Glad you played it safe! Hopefully this ice starts growing better!

It made up for last week that is sure.

X2 on the making ice. Looks like it is back to cold this next week.

Laker fishing on the first is gonna be tough though. I'm not sure tje lake I fish will be safe.....

Seemed like a nice early season and that dumping of snow and this warm weather/rain has reset the season on the lakes with little or no ice. My local hotspot still had a couple pockets of open water yesterday. It could be birds keeping it open. That happens every now and then, though I didn't see any. Could be a sign of a spring so it might be a good area to target when it does freeze up.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
