adamr
Looking at maybe the telescopic ones? Bought a yellow ht and all the hooks busted off looking to get a good one now.
dfeste
The best I've used is a wooden dowel with a hole in the end of it. You drill the hole a little bigger than the eye of the largest treble hook you can find and fill with epoxy and insert treble hook. It does not telescope but makes for a great gaff. Can be as long or short as you wish.
adamr
Dumb question but what kind of epoxy
dfeste
Don't think it matters. Just the two part stuff that comes in the double tube syringe that you mix before using. Pretty sure the last stuff I bought says quick set on it. It's in the paint/caulk area of Home Depot or Menards.

MarCumEric
What are you fishing that you need a gaff for? I think gaffs are a waste. Takes way too much time to find a spot to hook into a fish and pull them out especially when they are thrashing around in the hole. By the time you've hooked the fish, I'll already have mine on ice. Plus it hurts the fish and puts a hole in them from the hook. Just my opinion.
magnum mike
The telescoping gaff is called the Insta-gaff. I don't know if they make them any longer. I got mine from the guy who invented it almost 20 years ago.I don't use it often but it does get used. I don't whip it around the hole and impale the fish randomly. I used it this season on a big walleye caught on light line. When we got her head in the hole, I put the gaff on her bottom jaw and lifted her out of the hole. We took her picture and turned her loose.
fishadb
I have always just taken a piece of small round stock from the scrap pile put two bends in it and sharpened one end.
20lbSloughShark
The best gaff I ever had was a 3' peice of about 3/4" dowel, a hole with a big nail about 6" long in the bottom at a slight upward angle. It was really light, was my ice thickness gauge before I lost it, and saved me more than its share of northerns. Trebble gaffs are useless, and promote random hooking. A real gaff has a single sharp point that you hook in the jaw. A gaff is there to turn the head up the hole; if the head is up the hole, you dont need to gaff it. I dare you to stick your hand down to grab even the most tired northern. It will be just fine until one puts 32 half-inch deep gashes in your hand. What is with the gaff haters?
