Electric Clutch for Small Engine

merkman

Question

Reposted (Since intial post was in wrong forum) sorry... blush

Anyone ever install one of these before?

I modifying a snowblower to add an electric clutch and I am interested in any info that can help me with the design of the electric clutch mounting plate.

I have an electric clutch that looks similar to the following

a20792a134dc76ef7674ea_m.JPG

How are these types of clutches normally mounted? (say on a lawn tractor?)

I have heard that the bolts that mount the clutch (in the two slots) should allow movement of the clutch... (I was thinking of using shoulder bolts or a welded tab?) Or is it OK to bolt this up tight to a mounting bracket to fix the clutch in place? The clutch is already fastened to the crank with a bolt. I think the bolts that go though the slots are only for anti-rotation? Just not sure since I have never mounted one of these before.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I wouldn't bolt them solid. If it's off by a hair, it will cause excessive wear on the shaft bearings. My lawnmower has a clutch that looks just about like the one you have and it just has a bolt that is solidly bolted to the frame but not attached to the clutch - the bolt extends through the slot and keeps it from spinning. Make sense?

Thanks!!!

I am curious. What is the purpose of the electric clutch? What are you applying it too?

I will post some pics later.

I bought a snowblower from a garden tractor this summer.

Gonna put it on the front of my wheeler...

13 HP Small engine to power it

Electric Clutch so I can turn it on and off from inside the cab.

The chute will be powered from a car window motor.

Have all the pieces now, just need to build a couple mounts and get it running...

I am sure once it is running it won't snow all winter. grin

I just got a used thrower for my lawn tractor. It is 14 hp and the thrower is single stage. One thing I notices is that the rig is powered via a belt but I didn't see any shear bolts on the auger. The walk behind snow throwers I have owned all have shear bolts. If you are going to use a chain you probably should have some sort of device that will fail if you pick up a rock or branch or something.

How are you going to raise and lower the rig?

Very nice work. I am impressed that the unit stays 'straight' all the way up and down. "straight" isn't the correct word but it is Friday evening and I don't need to be able to think of it right now.

Understood... I think you are saying the blower will stay level no matter what height it is raised to.. Yes... I wanted to keep it level so I didn't have problems with the oil in the motor.

Over the range of motion the snowblower will move closer and further from the front end of the wheeler in an arcing motion.

To make the lift:

We used spring shackle mounts welded to steel plates.

The arms are made from square tube.

It mounts into the front receiver mount and works off the winch.

This is the motor I purchased... (Harbor freight special)

Crank Side with the electric clutch.

I am going to remove this box and relocate it inside my cab...

I will then be able to shut the motor off from inside the cab.

There are 5 wires going to the motor...

I will put a 5 wire straight though extension in line with these wires.

The motor to turn the snowblower chute is a car door window motor.

The chute will be controled from inside the cab with the following switch.

( I will put it in a small electronics project box)

This is the wiring diagram for the chute actuator.

The motor is mounted to a steel plate (that will later be mounted to the snowblower)

I then added some tabs to a socket extension.

Drilled a hole though the tabs, and pinned that to the existing linkage for the chute rotator.

The 12 point socket will then snap together with this linkage...

I still need to fab and install the Left and Right Chute limit switches.

Install the chute rotator motor to the snowblower

Fab and install the motor bracket with a receiver tube to fit into the lift mechanism.

Fab and install snow guards for the motors etc...

Finish up the electrical boxes for the on/off/start switch, clutch engage switch, chute rotator switch.

Wire it all up

And try it out.

It should work out nice.

Looks great. Something tells me that this has little to do with removing snow and a lot to do with boys wanting to play with their toys. My son and I used to to things like this before he moved out to NY.

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
