Last day on the open water = A great day of crappie fishing

What a beautiful day to end the 2012 open water season. Went out searching for the crappie and found them scattered along the weeds. I usually fish deep most of the summer but this is a great time to take advantage of finding early ice spots when we actually get some ice. The crappie were sitting 13 FOW tight to the bottom and hungry!!

Used the float and fly method by rigging a small float bobber and my own hand tied 80th oz hair jigs with no meat 9 feet down from the bobber. This is a very deadly method when fishing crappie because you do not have to waste anytime re baiting after you catch a fish. simply catch the fish, take the hook out, send that beautiful creature back and cast for another one. Hot color was chartreuse with a white head. Make sure that when you cast out you give the hair jig tons of action and do not let it sit. This method is very good for covering lots of water quick.

I simply cast out, let the jig fall for 5 seconds and slowly retrieve it back by twitching it. Get a feel for what your bobber is doing as you are retrieving it and look for little odd indicators like a bigger ripple in the water, tension on your line, or your bobber moving in a different direction.

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and remember to pass on the tradition and take a kid fishing!!!
