Open water "ice fishing"?

Does anyone take their stuff to the end of a dock while there is still open water and fish "ice fishing" style? Hang the ducer or camera off the end of the dock to see if there are fish.

I've done this on early ice when I don't trust walking on it. Just never during open water.

I've not done this from a dock, but I have done it in my canoe on a really calm day. Paddled out to my ice fishing spot, dropped the camera, and started fishing with my ice fishing gear.

I did this in the afternoon on Black Friday a few years ago and the temperatures starting dropping while I was out there. By morning, there was skim ice on the lake.
