MUSKIE MONSTERS

Recommended Posts

I've had the "sickness" for 20 years and I have fished very hard, and still learn something new everytime on the water. Muskies can be 'easy' at times, but most of the time they will send you home wondering what you did wrong. It still comes down to the simple fact that you need to find an active fish and put something in front of her that trips her trigger.

My two biggest fish so far are;

October 1998 Leech Lake 57.25 x 26.5 = 50 pounds +/- (Bucktail)

October 2003 Lake Vermilion 51.5 x 27 = 46 pounds +/- (Jackpot)

Keep fishing, the big ones will show up sooner or later. Pick a few lures and learn how to work them. Don't think you need to have 500 lures to catch a Muskie. I have 500 and always use the same 15-20 lures over the season. Pick up a mixture that will fish from top to bottom, fast to slow and then get 2 of each. You don't want to be caught without a spare. ;-)

Good Luck!
Steve

My largest so far is 53 inches long by 26 inches around. It was caught out of the reeds just north of Gull Island on Leech, July of 2002. I have no idea how much this fish would have weighed.

The best part was how shocked my wife was after she realized how large the fish was. I do not really thinnk she believed me until I got the pictures back.

RU,
I was alone on that night, caught her just as it was getting too dark to see. Funny thing was that I was fishing up and down the shore, while another boat was trolling just outside of me. He caught a nice 46" fish and came over for me to take his picture. We were the only two boats in the area. He left about an hour before I caught my fish.

I now have a digital camera with a timer and remote control, plus a tripod to put it on. I just didn't want a picture of that fish laying on the floor of my boat -- I hate those pictures.

Someday I will catch another, it's just a matter of time. The right place at the right time!

Holy Balls............. grin.gif

RU, haven't heard that term in about 2 weeks.

Yes, I'm laughing at both the term and the size of that fish!!!!

Good grief........anyone want to go swimming out there????

Freak, I give you a ton of credit for realeasing it. You are a better man than me........I don't think I would of been able to let go of that fish, just due to being fascinated by the enormous size.

My biggest to date is at 35lbs (actually, about 34.5, but I rounded the weight up)

I do have a 28lb, 13oz pike that is only 45.5" long. I picked it up a few years ago walleye fishing up by Virginia area. I caught it on 6lb test line.

Mine was 45# out of Tonka (8/13/02).

I had one last year that would have gave the state record a good run, but lost it on a jump. She followed it up the very next cast but wasn't too interested in hitting on my figure 8. I did get a 47" that day so it wasn't all that bad.

Tonka Boy,

What were the measurements on that 45# fish from Minnetonka. For August on that lake that is quite a fish. Didn't know they got that thick out there. That is impressive!! I would love to hear that story.

Mr. B,

An online muskie calculator puts your 53x26 monster at 44.785#. Very nice to say the least.

The largest I have caught was 43". Just over 21# on the calculator. Just caught it a couple of weeks ago on a firetiger bucktail in 3 feet of water over the rocks. Very nice fight.

53" X 30" in October of 2002. Not likely to beat that one any time soon. I've had others up to the boat that were longer but nowhere near as thick.
Hey muskylureguy, lets put some time in this weekend and get you one, then you can add to this post!

Bushwacker,

Thanks for the info. When people see the picture and ask how large it was I have been telling them it was between 40 and 45 lbs. Looks like I have been in the ballpark.

Thanks again!

My picture was just put up by Paul on the Muskie photoboard thread. And yes it was in the US, Minnesota too. But I don't know that I want to get anymore particular than that. Hehehe. Too many people already know, luckily not many of them fish muskies.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
