Moonshine
I have a 2004 Johnson 9.9 hp kicker motor that is running very poorly. It will idle in neutral O.K. and runs good when put in gear and throttled higher than minimum RPMs. When I try to troll with it and leave the idle just off neutral it will run good for a short while, then die. If I respond quickly enough as it is puttering out I can throttle up to keep it going. That gets old and I don’t always have the time to react. I adjusted the idle screw already and if I idle it higher it will run smooth, however it goes too fast to troll cranks effectively. No way I could run bottom bouncers now either. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Should I replace the carburetor and fuel pump? Any ideas are much appreciated.
