crack in motor

I have a hairline crack in the lower unit that is slowley leaking oil, what are my options can I put something on it to seal it or do I need to replace the lower unit? its literally a hairline crack! Thanks

You can try some JB weld if you want, but it won't last long, due to water pressure against the unit it will rip or wear off quickly.

You have no choice than have it taken apart and have it welded or get a new housing, which is a very expensive option.

What engine do you have? A gearcase for a 20 HP will be considerably less than a 200 HP. You may also be able to find a used case.

As far as welding goes, it depends on where the crack is. An experienced aluminum welder can usually weld it without a problem but if its in a place where a bearing race sits, or where the bearing carrier sits, it can be difficult.

Oh sorry its and 1982 Johnson 25 hp. Im not exactly sure how to explain where it sits. let me see if i can get a piture of it on here!

You need to take the lower unit apart and see what caused the housing to crack there it looks to be where the pinion gear sits so there probably is more problems internally

Hogwild, did u drain the oil out last fall or this spring? Did you find water. Horizontal cracks like that can be from freeze damage.

Boatfixer...this is really hard to say but I just bought the darn thing this spring! I am taking it to a marine shop this afternoon to have them look at it and like warrior said see if its anything internal!
